Instruments by this maker are exceedingly rare, there being in fact only three found to date with his maker's mark on them; a baroque flute, a celebrated baroque racket and of course his four-keyed bassoon which is housed in the Gemeentemuseum in the Hague. Little is known of him besides the facts that he was related to the woodwind builder Robert Wyne (1698-1774) and worked in Nijmegen during the 18th century. The original bassoon shows refined wood and metal work with delicate key shapes and some carving on the wing joint. My copy is executed in dark brown stained eastern hard rock maple and pitched at a=415 with four brass keys. It has a bright and full bodied tone well suited to large halls and orchestral use. |
